Brief Description of the Golf Course and/or Club

As one of America’s oldest and most prestigious golf clubs, Atlantic City Country Club has been home to many firsts, including being the "Birth place of the Birdie." The Course has a tradition of fast a firm greens with uncompromising playing conditions and its bayside setting is reminiscent of the historic links in Scotland and Ireland.

The challenge of each hole defines this course on a championship level. The course’s beauty lies just beyond the greens where you can escape into a coastal setting that offers over 170 acres of lushness, surrounded by tidal marshes. These undulating greens and velvet fairways offer an undaunting sense of purity.

This links-style course features tree-lined fairways and fast greens. The terrain is predominantly flat and easy to walk. However, elevation changes and a few hills will cause uneven lies. Water comes into play on 7 holes. The course plays from 6,175 to 6,539-yards and is suitable for all handicaps. According to locals, this is one of the oldest courses in the United States.

Course has been partly redesigned, and restored to near it's 1897 original atmosphere, including the trolley bell which rang indicating the last trolley back in to Atlantic City in the days prior to private transportation. Replicated cedar boxes sit upon the T boxes which used to contain sand to build a T.

History of the Golf Facility

Since our founding in 1897, the Atlantic City Country Club has been at the forefront of the sport, both nationally and internationally. The prestigious and historic Atlantic City Country Club proudly carries the distinctions of "The Birthplace of the Birdie," as well as being the site where the term “Eagle” was coined.

Six USGA Major Championships have been played at this legendary course. Walter Travis won the 1901 USGA Amateur Championship, after taking up golf late in life at the age of 35. In 1911, our Club Professional, Johnny J. McDermott, became the first American to win the USGA Open Championship, at the young age of 19! Babe Didrikson Zaharias won the first of three USGA Women’s Open Championships at the Club in 1948. The $7,500 purse was put up by fifty-five Atlantic City businessmen and fans paid $2.50 to see the final round on Sunday. Don January captured the inaugural PGA Senior Tour event played at ACCC in 1980.

Many other legendary names have played our course, including Sammy Snead and Howard Everitt. Bob Hope was an Atlantic City Country Club regular, first becoming acquainted with the Club when he worked on the vaudeville circuit. Arnold Palmer played our course from 1951- 1952 when he was a relatively unknown Coast Guard enlisted man.

Ringing in Tradition: The Atlantic City Country Club Bell was originally used in the early 1900’s to remind golfers that the last trolley was about to leave for Atlantic City. Today, we once again ring the bell at the end of each day and invite you to “Play a Round With History!”

1911 – John J. McDermott, A.C.C.C. Golf Professional – First American to win the U.S.G.A. Open Championship, he repeats in 1912.

Course Review / Comments

Hole: #1 – Title: Yea Begin, Yardage:  Back-450   Middle-428   Forward-366
Players are immediately challenged at Atlantic City Country Club by this straight away, challenging Par 4.  Players playing from the back tees will face a forced carry over water leaving a long iron approach shot to a well protected green. Tee shots missing the first fairway are challenged by deep rough to the left and a large fairway bunker on the right. The first green is protected by a deep bunker on the left and a closely mown collection area to the right.

Hole: #3 - Title: Major’s Favorite, Yardage: Back-353   Middle-339   Forward-301
Our third hole is a traditional, short Par 4 that requires a very accurate tee shot with a three wood or long iron and is guarded by out of bounds to the right and a massive fairway bunker strategically placed down the whole left side of the fairway. An accurate tee shot will leave the player with a mid to short iron approach. The third green is an elevated, well-protected green surrounded by three greenside bunkers. Players should be aware to leave their approach shot below the hole because this original green construction design slopes downhill back to front.

Hole: #9 - Title: Adirondacks, Yardage: Back-452   Middle-436   Forward-391
Our ninth hole is named for the comfortable Adirondack chairs located under the cedar trees surrounding the green. The ninth hole is a demanding dogleg left hole that is anything but comfortable. The longer hitter can attack the dogleg by hitting a tee shot over the large bunker guarding the left side of the fairway. A well-placed drive will significantly shorten one’s approach shot, but a drive missed left will be blocked by trees guarding the hole. The more conservative, safe play is to aim the tee shot to the right of the fairway bunker leaving a long iron shot to a heavily bunkered green.

Hole: #14 - Title: Salt Marsh, Yardage: Back-339   Middle-333   Forward-323
Our 14th hole is a short, demanding Par 4 requiring a forced carry over the salt marsh. The longer hitter can drive this green when the hole is playing downwind, but this aggressive play only brings more of the salt marsh hazard into play. A more conservative play is to aim left of the salt marsh leaving a short iron approach shot to a very undulating, two tiered green. Players tee off from a peninsula teeing area in Lakes Bay, affording all a spectacular view of the Atlantic City skyline.

Hole: #18 - Title: Trolley Back, Yardage: Back-432   Middle-384   Forward-334
Our 18th hole is aptly named for the last Trolley that brought golfing guests back to Atlantic City. Players would listen for the ringing of the trolley bell signifying the departure of the last trolley. The 18th hole is a challenging Par 4 that faces northward and usually plays into some type of wind. Large fairway bunkers line both sides of this hole, so an accurate drive is required. The perfect drive should favor the left center of the fairway to help avoid large trees guarding the approach shot on the right side of the fairway. A player finding this fairway will face a mid to short iron shot to an elevated, two tiered green. The 18th green is also surrounded by large bunkers as well as a closely mown collection area. Players will see our prestigious clubhouse as they complete play.
